Anouk Tschanz is a photographer whose work moves seamlessly between technical precision and conceptual abstraction. Her close up shots tread the line between form and dissolution of form, opening up understandings of what is depicted beyond its mere figuration. Tschanz employs analog black and white photography and is printing in her own darkroom. She produces handmade prints using techniques like split-grade filtering, image masking, post-exposure, or dodging. This gives the ability to influence the pictures taken by making artistic decisions during the film-developing and enlargement process in the darkroom.
Tschanz is interested in processes of pictorial creation, in surfaces, materiality, light, depth. Her works showcase quintessential subjects of nature photography, such as leaves, flowers and stones. Tschanz photographs her subjects with small, medium and large format cameras in their original environment as well as in the studio.
